I have a confession: I’ve been dropping into Apex Legends since 2019, and I still can’t quit. My squad calls it “the hobby,” my therapist calls it “a concerning attachment to a robot with a sword,” and Respawn calls it “engagement metrics.” But here we are in 2026, and the level cap debate is still the community’s favorite zombie—it keeps coming back, no matter how many times we shoot it. 🧟‍♂️🎮

When Apex Legends launched in 2019, the level cap was 100. Once you hit it, your XP bar became a sad, empty rectangle. Players screamed. Respawn listened and raised the cap to 500, also reducing the XP required to hit 100. That felt generous. For about five minutes. By 2021, more and more of us were hitting 500 and wondering, “Is this it? Do I just... play for fun now?” The horror. 😱

Jason McCord, Design Director at Respawn Entertainment, responded to a fan tweet back in 2021, saying an increase was possible but hinting that the team was working on other progression fixes. Fast forward to 2026: Respawn did eventually raise the cap to 2000 with Prestige tiers. We got shiny badges, new rewards, and a fresh reason to grind. And then we hit the new ceiling. Because of course we did. 🙃

Now, in 2026, my friends list is full of Prestige 3 and Prestige 4 players. We’ve unlocked the badges. We’ve bought the heirlooms. We’ve argued about matchmaking. And we’re all staring at a maxed-out level bar like it owes us money. The question is the same as 2019: where do we go from here?

Year Level Cap Community Mood
2019 100 “What now?”
2021 500 “What now, but higher?”
2022 2000 + Prestige “What now, with a shiny badge?”
2026 2000 (Prestige 4) “What now, again?”

Progression is not just a number. It is a promise. In a free-to-play battle royale that depends on consistent player numbers, having something to aim for keeps people logging in. Playing with friends is fun, sure, but without a target, some gamers drift. They wander off to the next shiny shooter, the next battle pass, the next game that says “you are level 1, and you are special.” Gamers are fickle. Give us a number to chase, or we will chase a different number somewhere else. 🏃‍♂️💨

There are other accolades, like the “Apex Predator” title in Ranked mode. That is great if you have the skills, the squad, and the patience to grind through the sweatiest lobbies known to humanity. But a max level is a better shorthand for “I have been here.” It is the universal badge that says “I remember when Kings Canyon had fewer holes.” It rewards time, not just talent. And in 2026, with so many live-service games fighting for attention, that matters more than ever.

So what should Respawn do? I have a few ideas, and because I am a generous veteran, I will share them for free:

  • Raise the cap again. 3000? 5000? Go wild. I have no life and a lot of XP boosts. 🚀

  • Add infinite Prestige levels with cosmetic milestones. Give me a badge that says “I need a hobby.”

  • Introduce account-wide challenges that reward long-term play. Not just daily chores.

  • Create legacy stats and veteran lobbies. Let me flex my Season 0 badge in peace.

  • Let max-level players convert XP into something useful. Heirloom shards? A cool charm? A therapy session? 🛋️

  • Refresh the reward track so hitting the cap feels like an achievement, not a funeral.

I do not need a medal for touching grass. I need a medal for not touching grass. That is the Apex way. 🌿❌🏅

Respawn has kept Apex Legends alive with new legends, maps, modes, and updates. The game has survived mobile shutdowns, current-gen upgrades, and more meta shifts than I can count. But progression is the glue. In 2026, the level cap is not just a number. It is a reason to stay. So please, Respawn, either raise the cap or give me a new shiny thing to chase. I will be here, dropping into Fragment, yelling at my squad, and waiting. ⏳

Apex Legends is available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch, with current-gen versions now part of the lineup. Mobile came and went. The grind, however, is forever. 🎮
